Is the coast road or the Downs the better drive?

The A259 east towards Beachy Head is the obvious one, and it is genuinely good early on a Sunday and genuinely slow by eleven. The climb over Ditchling Beacon is steep, narrow and popular with cyclists, so it is a road to enjoy at a walking pace rather than attack. Inland, the A272 runs the width of Sussex through villages and beech woods and is the better drive of the three. The seafront itself is for arriving on, not for driving — it is a promenade with traffic on it.

Is Goodwood a day trip from here?

Comfortably. It is about thirty-five miles west, so the Festival of Speed, the Revival and the Members' Meetings are all reachable without staying over. What matters is that those weekends fill the whole region — hotels, restaurants and hire availability — months ahead, and the lanes around Chichester queue solidly on the way in and out. Treat a Goodwood date as a fixed-date booking made early rather than a spontaneous one, and expect the handover to be set on the earlier side of the morning. Leaving before seven turns that queue into a drive, which is the whole trick of the weekend.

Do the seafront events close the road?

Regularly. Madeira Drive hosts motoring events through the year, the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run finishes on the front on the first Sunday of November, the spring marathon takes over the seafront and much of the eastern approach, and the summer parade brings the widest closures of the year across the centre. All of them are published well in advance. Give us your date and we will tell you whether your street sits inside a closure and where the handover should move to if it does. It is far easier to move a handover by an hour than to argue with a road closure.

What are the Downs lanes actually like?

Narrower and dirtier than the postcard suggests. Many of them are sunken between high banks with no passing places and blind bends, and the ones that serve farms carry flint, mud and chalk slurry onto the tarmac for most of the winter — chalk in the wet is genuinely slippery and it stays that way for hours after rain stops. They are beautiful and they reward a slow car more than a fast one. If your address is down one, tell us, because a transporter will not get down most of them.

Do you deliver to Hove and the villages under the Downs?

Yes, and those addresses are often the easier ones. Hove has wider streets and more garages than Brighton proper, Rottingdean and Saltdean sit above the sea with driveway space, and Lewes, Ditchling, Steyning and the villages towards Arundel are all in the same run. Delivery in one and collection in another is a single arrangement, so the car can arrive at a house under the Downs and go back from a hotel on the front, or the other way round, without a return leg you have to drive yourself. Steyning and Bramber are the quietest of them and the easiest places here to hand a car over.

What should I know about the sea itself?

That it gets into everything. A car parked on the front overnight in any wind comes back covered in salt film, and after a storm there is shingle across the road and in the wheel arches. The A259 along the undercliff catches crosswinds hard enough to move a light car. If you want photographs on the seafront, the hour after sunrise is the only time it is both quiet and legal to stop in most of the bays, and it is also the only time the light does the car any favours.

What to expect at your address
