Is the city-centre Low Emission Zone a problem for this car?

It does. The zone covers the city centre and, unlike the English schemes that exempt private cars, it applies to them, with a minimum emissions standard that modern petrol performance cars meet as a matter of course. We confirm the standing of the specific vehicle before you book. Enforcement is camera-based and the penalty attaches to the vehicle rather than the driver, and repeat entries escalate, so this is one to settle in advance. What is the drive north from Glasgow?

The A82 along Loch Lomond and on through Glencoe is the headline, though the lochside section is narrower, bumpier and more tightly walled than its reputation implies, and a wide car needs room it does not always have. The A83 over the Rest and Be Thankful is the classic pass and is prone to closure after heavy rain, with traffic put onto the old military road below. Two hours from a Glasgow doorstep puts you in the middle of the best road network in the country. Fuel and food both thin out beyond Crianlarich, so fill up before committing to the long way round.

Is a longer hire worth it in Scotland?

More often than in England, yes. Three or four days is about right for a Highlands loop, because the distances between the good sections are long and rushing them wastes the point of being there. Fuel stations thin out sharply north and west of Fort William, and several close early, which matters in a car doing single-figure miles per gallon when pressed. If an island is part of the plan, the ferry operator takes vehicle reservations separately and summer sailings fill well ahead. Three days also leaves you a spare one for the weather, which on the west coast is not a luxury.

What should I know about these roads in winter?

That they are wonderful and genuinely demanding at the same time. Passes hold ice in shade long after the glens have thawed, the A82 and the A9 both close for snow in a hard week, and daylight in December runs out by mid-afternoon. Performance tyres go hard and lose grip well before the road looks slippery. Deer come down to the roadside at dusk and are a real hazard on the Loch Lomond and Rannoch stretches. None of it is a reason not to come — it is a reason to plan shorter days.

Do you go beyond the city into Ayrshire and the lochs?

Across the city and its suburbs — Bearsden, Milngavie, Newton Mearns, Whitecraigs, Giffnock — and out along the Clyde to Helensburgh, up the lochside, over to Loch Lomond, and down into Ayrshire and the golf coast at Troon and Turnberry. Edinburgh is an hour east, so a Glasgow delivery and an Edinburgh collection sit inside one booking. Is a tenement street a safe place to leave it?

Not on a controlled tenement street, realistically. A secure city-centre car park is the usual answer, with the height barrier checked first, or a hotel with parking of its own if you are staying in town. Suburban addresses solve it outright, which is one reason a handover in Bearsden or Newton Mearns is often easier than one in the West End even when the city street is closer to where you are eating. What to expect at your address

Tenement streets have no off-street parking behind them and the kerb space in front is controlled, so we agree a specific bay and a specific time instead of circling the block. The cross streets around Garnethill and Blythswood are steep enough to matter when a low car comes off a ramp, so we choose a flat stretch to unload on even if it means walking the car round afterwards. Out at Newton Mearns, Bearsden or Whitecraigs there is normally a drive, which is faster and more private. If your street is dug up, say so — it happens often enough to be worth asking about.
