Does the Tyneside clean air scheme apply to cars?

No. The Tyneside scheme is aimed at taxis, buses, coaches, vans and heavy goods vehicles, and private cars are not charged to enter it, which puts it in a different category from Birmingham or Bristol. That does not make the whole trip charge-free by default, because other cities on your route run their own schemes on their own rules. We check what applies to the specific car for the dates you are travelling and tell you, before you commit, which charges we deal with and which are billed on to you afterwards.

Where does a two-day hire go from Tyneside?

The coast road north through Alnwick to Bamburgh and Beadnell is one of the quietest genuinely beautiful drives in England, and it stays quiet outside August. Inland, the B6341 through Rothbury and the Military Road along Hadrian's Wall are the two to know: the second is Roman-straight, laid over a series of blind crests, and it hides oncoming traffic completely, so it demands more restraint than its sightlines invite. West on the A69 the Lake District is inside ninety minutes, which makes a three-day hire the sensible shape here. Take the A68 north instead and you are into the Borders inside an hour.

Do match days and the Great North Run affect delivery?

They do, more than in most cities, because the ground sits in the middle of town rather than out by a bypass. On a home fixture the streets around Barrack Road and Gallowgate close or fill, and the whole centre slows for a couple of hours either side. September's Great North Run shuts major routes and a river crossing for most of a morning, with the closures published in advance. Do you come out to the coast and County Durham?

Tynemouth, Whitley Bay, Morpeth, Hexham, Corbridge, Durham and Darlington are all part of the same run, along with the country-house addresses through the Tyne valley and the villages either side of the A68. Northumberland proper — Alnwick, Bamburgh, the Cheviot foothills — is delivery country too, though those approaches are worth describing to us in advance. Delivery on Tyneside and collection somewhere entirely different, in Scotland or Yorkshire, sits inside one booking rather than two. If the address is a farm track or a walled courtyard rather than a drive, say so with the postcode and we will plan the last part around it.

What are the Tyneside streets like for standing and parking?

Grey Street is handsome, sloped and stone-set, which makes it a poor choice for anything low coming off a ramp; the flatter streets above it work better. Jesmond and Gosforth run resident permit schemes with enforced hours, so we agree a bay and a time. Overnight, the answer is a secure car park with a measured height barrier, a hotel with parking of its own, or a suburban drive. Leaving a car of this value on a Quayside street on a Saturday night is not something we would suggest. Give us the street and we will say which of those applies well before the day.

Is the Northumberland coast suitable for a low car?

The main coast road is, and it is worth the trip. The last mile to the beaches often is not. Several of the approaches to Bamburgh, Beadnell and Embleton run down single-track lanes with grass down the middle and parking on compacted sand or grass that turns soft after rain, and blown sand across the tarmac behaves like loose gravel under a wide tyre. Park on made ground at the top and walk the last stretch. It is a short walk and a much better outcome than a recovery truck on a dune.

What to expect at your address

Ponteland, Darras Hall and the Gosforth streets are the simplest handovers in the region, because there is usually a drive and the car never has to stand where anyone can watch it. The Quayside is the opposite: Dean Street and the Side are steep and stone-surfaced, the lanes off them are tight, and a transporter cannot work there at all, so the last leg is driven and we meet on flat ground nearby. If your route uses the Tyne Tunnel, say so. It is tolled, it reads the plate, and a crossing left unpaid becomes a penalty attached to the vehicle rather than the driver.
