Which Peak roads start closest to the city?

The A57 Snake Pass, the A6187 through Hathersage and the Hope valley, and the climb over Winnats Pass all begin inside half an hour of the western suburbs. Winnats is the spectacular one and also the one to take slowly: it is steep, narrow, walled by limestone and usually has walkers on it. The Snake is exposed moorland that closes for snow, wind and landslip more readily than an A road normally would, so look at its status on the morning rather than assuming it is open. Mam Nick and the drop into Edale are the quieter alternative when the Hope valley is full.

Do I need to think about a clean air charge in Sheffield?

No. The city's zone is aimed at buses, coaches, taxis, vans and lorries, and private cars are not charged for entering it — the same position as Newcastle, and the opposite of Birmingham and Bristol. We still check the standing of the exact car before you book, because a checked answer is worth more than a remembered one, and because a trip that starts here may well end somewhere with a different scheme. Whatever applies, you are told which charges sit with us before you commit. It is one line in the booking and it saves a bill turning up a fortnight later.

When is the Peak too busy to enjoy?

Late morning onwards on any dry weekend, and all of half-term. The A6187 through Hathersage becomes a queue, the Castleton car parks fill by ten, and the good corners fill with cyclists, walkers and photographers who have every right to be there. The pleasure in these roads is entirely in the timing: leave at seven on a Sunday and you get the Hope valley almost to yourself; leave at eleven and you get a slow-moving convoy with a better view. Plan the hire around the hour, not the day. Half-term weeks behave like weekends from Monday through to Friday, which catches a lot of people out.

Can you reach a property down a Peak lane?

Usually, with a conversation first. The obstacles up there are specific: cattle grids at the field boundaries, stone gateposts set at the width of a farm cart rather than a modern supercar, fords that run deeper than they look after rain, and gated tracks with a surface of loose rubble. A covered transporter reaches very few of those doors. We drive the last part, and where even that is unwise we hand over at the nearest made road and follow you in so nobody is guessing about clearance. Nobody enjoys finding out about a cattle grid with the car already on it.

Do you cross into Derbyshire and the Peak villages?

Across the city and out to Chesterfield, Dronfield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster, west into the Peak as far as Bakewell, Buxton and Tideswell, and north towards Huddersfield. The country-house addresses on the Derbyshire side are part of the same run. Because the good roads start so close to the city, delivery here and collection somewhere else — Manchester, Leeds, a house in the Dales — works particularly well. A one-way hire is an ordinary arrangement here rather than a special case, priced against the two addresses you actually give us.

Does the Peak shut when it snows?

Different from the city they start at. Sheffield can be wet while the moor tops are under snow, and the passes — the Snake, Woodhead, the road over to Buxton — close first and reopen last. Gritting concentrates on main routes, so the lanes below Stanage and around Longshaw stay treacherous long after the A roads are clear. Performance tyres are near useless below about seven degrees. A winter hire here is still worth doing; it just wants shorter days, a valley route and no fixed arrival time at the far end.

What to expect at your address

Peak addresses are welcome, but the lanes past Hathersage and Baslow narrow quickly and the dry-stone walls do not move, so the final stretch is driven rather than transported. Closer in, the recurring problem is the driveway lip. Sheffield's hillside streets throw up short, steeply angled drives, and a car with real front overhang grounds going in rather than coming out. Tell us if yours is one of those and we will hand over on the flat instead and let you take it in gently. If the property sits up an unsurfaced track, say so: that changes which car makes sense, not whether we come.
