Two local facts govern this. The first is the road surface: much of the New Town and the Old Town is laid in stone setts, and the street we choose has to suit a low car as well as allow a legal stop. The second is controlled parking, which covers most of the centre and dictates where a car may wait and when. In August, closures rewrite both of those. You will have the window from a person, agreed with you, ahead of any commitment.

Edinburgh hires are usually attached to something specific: a wedding at a country house, a week during the festival, a Highlands run that starts on the Queensferry Crossing. We deliver into the New Town, Morningside, Cramond and Barnton, to hotel forecourts in the centre, and out towards Gullane and North Berwick, then collect from this city or another one. Setts, gradients and controlled parking make the street matter here as much as the postcode does. Does the Low Emission Zone cover the car I hire?

Yes. Edinburgh's LEZ covers the city centre and applies to cars, not only to buses and vans, with a minimum emissions standard that modern petrol prestige cars meet in the ordinary course. We confirm the position on the specific vehicle before booking rather than after. Enforcement runs on cameras reading the number plate, and the charge for a breach attaches to the vehicle, so it is worth settling as part of the booking. The council publishes the boundary and the current penalty terms. The Glasgow scheme is a separate one with its own boundary, so a trip taking in both cities crosses two of them.

What changes if my dates fall in August?

Almost everything about the logistics, and none of it about whether we come. The festival turns the centre into a shifting map of closures and suspended bays, some announced late, and parking becomes the binding constraint on the whole hire rather than a detail at the end of it. Tell us before you book where the car will spend the nights — a hotel with its own parking, a secure car park, or an address out of the centre entirely — because in August that answer changes which handover point is sensible and sometimes which car is.

Where does the car park overnight in the New Town?

Not on the street, in most cases. The central zones are controlled through the evening and the resident permits attach to a registration, so a hire car has no standing in them. What works is a secure car park with a barrier you have measured, a hotel that has its own parking rather than an arrangement with a nearby garage, or one of the mews garages if you have access to one. Addresses in Cramond, Barnton or Ravelston generally have a drive, and that is the simplest overnight answer in the city.

Where do people head from Edinburgh?

North over the Queensferry Crossing towards Perthshire, then the A9 into the Cairngorms, which is fast, monitored throughout and best treated as transport rather than sport. South into the Borders on the A68 and the A7, both quieter and better surfaced than most drivers expect. East along the A198 through Gullane and Dirleton to North Berwick, which is a short, pretty run with somewhere to eat at the end. Inverness is roughly three hours, which makes four days the sensible minimum for anything involving the north coast. Whichever direction you pick, the first half hour out of the city is the slowest part of the day.

Do rugby internationals and Hogmanay affect the handover?

Both do. Murrayfield on an international day empties into the west end of the city and the streets around the ground go to residents-only enforcement, so a handover there is best set well before kick-off or somewhere else altogether. Hogmanay closes Princes Street and much of the centre for the events, with the closures going in during the day rather than at the last minute. Give us the date with the address and we will tell you which side of the cordon you are on before you commit to anything.

Do you come out to East Lothian and over into Fife?

Yes. Cramond, Barnton, Murrayfield, Colinton and Morningside are the same run as the centre, and East Lothian — Gullane, Aberlady, North Berwick and the golf coast — is comfortably inside it. Over the bridge, Fife and St Andrews are straightforward, and the Borders towns to the south are no harder. What to expect at your address

New Town setts are harder on a low front splitter than they look, and several streets are more steeply crowned at the kerb than a photograph suggests, so a car coming off a ramp at an angle can ground on the way down. We choose the handover street with that in mind and will propose one street over if yours is a problem. Where a mews lane is involved we check the width and the turning space at the far end first, because a blind-ended mews with a delivery van behind you is not where anyone wants to reverse a wide car in a hurry.
