Can you lease a car you have never driven?
Updated 6 min read Performance & Prestige
Yes, and most people do — but a three-month minimum term is long enough that the homework is worth doing first. We run no test drives and hold no demonstrators. What we can do is tell you honestly what a specific car is like to live with, including when the answer is that it is the wrong one for you.
Why is there no test drive?
Because we are not a dealer. Every car here is either out on an agreement, being prepared for one, or held by a partner for the same purpose. There is no demonstrator fleet sitting behind the catalogue, and there is nowhere to come and drive one, because there are no depots or showrooms to come to.
Saying that plainly is better than the alternative, which is an enquiry that spends a fortnight discovering it.
It does change what we owe you, though. If you cannot drive it first, then the description, the photographs and the conversation have to do more work — and we would rather talk you out of a car than into one.
What should you check before committing?
The practical things, because they are what three months exposes and an afternoon does not.
- Where it will live. Measure the garage and the parking space, including the width with the doors open.
- How it gets off your drive. A dropped kerb, a ramp, a speed bump on the road out — a low nose finds all of them.
- What has to fit in it. Boot space, rear seats, a child seat, a dog, the weekly shop.
- How you will fuel or charge it. Especially on an electric car with no home charger.
- Who else drives it. Every driver has to be named and checked in advance.
None of those needs a test drive. All of them end agreements early when they are skipped.
What is worth asking us about a specific car?
Ask what it is actually like rather than what it does on paper. Whether it is comfortable over distance. How conspicuous it is in a residential street. What it is like to park. Whether the ride is liveable on the roads you actually drive on. What it does not like.
Ask about the ownership experience too: how the mileage allowance sits against your week, what the excess mileage rate is, what the deposit hold is and what the insurance excess is on that particular vehicle.
And ask what we would put in front of you instead. A supplier who only ever agrees with your shortlist is not helping you.
Where can you sit in one without leasing it?
Manufacturer showrooms are the obvious answer and an underused one — you can sit in most of these, adjust the seat, open the boot and close the doors, without any obligation at all.
Motor shows, make events and owners' club meetings are the other route, and often better, because the people there have lived with the car rather than sold it.
None of that tells you how it drives. It does tell you whether you fit, whether your things fit, and whether the interior is somewhere you want to spend three months, which are the three things photographs are worst at conveying.
Take a tape measure and the bag you actually travel with. Ten minutes in a stationary car answers more of the questions that end agreements early than an hour of reading does, and nobody in a showroom minds.
What does the three-month floor mean if you get it wrong?
It means a decision you live with rather than one you undo on Monday. Three months is the shortest agreement we write, and it is a genuine commitment rather than a rolling arrangement.
That cuts both ways, and the honest version is worth saying. The shorter agreement is exactly what makes a car like this reachable without buying one — and it is also long enough that the wrong choice is a real inconvenience.
If you are unsure between two, say so at the enquiry stage. It is a much better conversation than the one in month two.
How do you choose between two cars you have never driven?
Compare them on the things that differ day to day rather than the things that differ on a specification sheet.
Size and visibility. How many doors, and how usable the back is. Ground clearance against the roads you actually use. Whether it is a gearbox you will be happy with in traffic. How loud it is at a constant speed, and how loud it is outside your house at seven in the morning.
Then compare the cost stacks side by side rather than waiting on the monthly figures — the deposit, the excess and the excess mileage rate are published on every vehicle page, and they vary far more between two similar cars than most people expect. What moves the price of a prestige lease explains why.
What will you tell us straight?
If the car is wrong for what you have described, we will say so. If a vehicle will not clear your drive, if the allowance is nowhere near the mileage you have told us about, if the named driver does not meet that car's criteria — you hear it before you commit, not after.
We would rather lose an agreement than write one that ends badly, and three months is long enough that an unhappy agreement is uncomfortable for both sides.
That is also why nothing is paid on the website and a person confirms every agreement. The conversation is the point at which this gets caught.
What happens at handover if you have never seen the car?
You see it properly before you sign anything. The agreement is sent in advance to read, so the document is not new to you at the kerbside — and handover itself takes about fifteen minutes.
That includes a joint photographed walk round of every panel, wheel and the interior, and a proper run through the car: the drive modes, the nose lift if it has one, where the charge flap is, what it does not like.
Take your own photographs at the same time. Delivery and collection sets out the sequence in full.
Common questions
Can I swap the car mid-term if I do not get on with it?
Ask before you sign rather than after. It is not something we publish as a right, because it depends on what is free at the time and on the agreement you are on — and anything agreed goes in writing rather than being settled in a phone call.
Can I see photographs of the exact car rather than the model?
Ask, and say that is what you want. On a vehicle in our fleet that is straightforward. On a partner-arranged car it depends on who holds it, and we would rather tell you that than send you something generic and let you assume otherwise.
Do you offer a short trial before the minimum term starts?
No. Three months is the shortest agreement we write on any vehicle and there is no trial product underneath it. Short-term hire is not something this business does, so a trial is not a thing we can quietly arrange either.
Can I decline the car at handover if it is not what I expected?
Raise anything at the walk round rather than after the transporter has gone — that is exactly what the joint photographed inspection is for. If the vehicle is not the one described in the agreement, say so on the spot and it is dealt with then, not later.
Is a car I have only seen online safe to commit to for three months?
It is what most people do, and it works when the practical checks are done first — where it lives, how it gets off the drive, what fits in it, who drives it. The failures are almost never about how the car drives. They are about where it has to fit.
