What is the X5 M Competition like to drive?
Absurd, in the best sense. The chassis gives it cornering discipline that a full-size SUV has no business having, and the V8 makes a noise that carries into the cabin without becoming tiring. It is firmer than a standard X5 at low speed. On a fast A-road it makes far more sense than the specification suggests.
Is it usable as a family car?
Yes, which is the whole argument for it. Underneath the performance it is still a five-seat X5 with a deep boot, a high driving position and a well-insulated cabin. It will do a school run in the morning and an unrepeatable overtake in the afternoon. Fuel consumption is the honest downside: expect the high teens at best.
How is the Competition different from a standard X5 M?
In the UK the Competition is effectively the only version offered, so the comparison is mostly academic here. It carries the higher output, firmer engine mounts, a specific exhaust and cosmetic changes over the base X5 M sold in other markets.
