Leasing a prestige car for more than one driver

Updated 6 min read Performance & Prestige

Every driver must be named on the agreement in advance and must meet that specific vehicle’s own age, licence and points criteria in their own right. There is no pool arrangement where anyone with a company badge can take the keys. Drivers can usually be added or swapped during the term if you ask before it happens rather than after.

How many people can be named on one car?

It is a question about who, not how many. Each person is assessed individually against the specific vehicle, so the list is built name by name rather than granted as an allowance.

What there is not is a pool arrangement. A leased car here is not a company vehicle that anyone with a staff card can sign out; every driver is named on the agreement and checked in advance, and the list is part of the agreement rather than an operational detail we hold separately.

Tell us at the enquiry stage who is realistically going to drive it. That is a far easier conversation than adding somebody in month four.

Be realistic rather than minimal about that list. The temptation is to name one driver to keep the paperwork small, and it works right up until the evening somebody else needs to move the car. A name submitted at the start costs nothing; the same name needed at short notice is a set of checks that cannot be compressed.

Why is each driver tested against the car rather than the company?

Because the test belongs to the insurer, and the insurer is pricing the combination of that driver and that vehicle.

Every car publishes its own three figures: a minimum driver age, a minimum period of full licence held and a points tolerance. A driver has to pass all three on the vehicle they are being named on, and the tests do not travel — somebody acceptable on one may not be acceptable on another from the same manufacturer.

The company's standing does not enter into it, and neither does a larger deposit. It is an insurance condition, not a commercial one. Driver requirements sets out the three tests.

How do you add or swap a driver mid-term?

Ask before it happens, not after. The new driver goes through the same checks as the first: licence, DVLA check code, years held, endorsements, identity and address, tested against that specific vehicle.

Adding a driver during a term is usually possible. It is never instant, because the checks are real checks, and it is never something that can be done at the roadside.

If a change is coming — somebody leaving, a new director joining, a project moving to a different team — flag it early. The version of this that goes wrong is always the one where the change happened first and we were told afterwards.

One car with several drivers, or several cars on one agreement?

They are different problems and it is worth being clear which one you have.

Several people sharing one vehicle is a named-driver question: one car, one set of figures, several names against it, each checked individually. The practical constraints are about seats, keys and who is present at handover.

Several vehicles on one agreement is a sourcing question: one agreement, one invoice, a named driver against each, and each car keeping its own monthly figure, deposit, excess, allowance and criteria. Nothing is averaged. Leasing through a limited company covers how that agreement is structured.

Who is responsible when the driver is not the signatory?

The company is the party to the agreement, so the company carries the obligations under it — the monthly figure, the mileage, the condition of the vehicle at collection.

The refundable deposit is separate and sits against a payment card in the named hirer's own name, which is a person. That does not change because there are several drivers; there is still one named hirer holding the deposit.

Damage is settled against the insurance excess on that car, whoever was driving, provided the person at the wheel was named. If they were not, the excess stops being the ceiling.

Worth agreeing internally before the car arrives: who in the business carries that exposure, and whether a driver who damages the vehicle is expected to contribute. That is your policy rather than ours, but it is far better written down in week one than argued about in week twenty.

What happens at handover with several drivers?

The named driver receiving the car has to be there in person with their physical licence. Any additional driver being checked at the same time should be there too — it is far simpler than arranging a second check later.

The walk round is joint and photographed, and it is the condition record that both sides rely on at collection. Take your own photographs as well.

If a second driver cannot make the handover, say so in advance so their checks are completed separately rather than assumed. Delivery and collection sets out the sequence.

What happens if somebody drives who is not named?

They are not insured. This is the one thing in the whole arrangement we are inflexible about, and it is worth understanding exactly why.

An unnamed driver is not a breach of an administrative condition with a fee attached. It sits outside what any self-drive policy covers, which means the insurance excess — the figure that would otherwise cap your exposure — stops applying at all. The liability becomes the cost of the car.

There is no version of this that gets sorted out afterwards, and no circumstance in which somebody can be added at the kerbside. If the plan needs a second driver, name them before the car moves.

What to send us so it is right first time

For each person who will realistically drive: full name, date of birth, licence number, years of full licence held, endorsements with their codes, a DVLA check code, photo identity and proof of address.

Alongside it, which car each driver is being named against, and who is the named hirer holding the deposit.

Then the criteria are checked against the vehicle before anything is booked out, and you find out about a mismatch while there is still time to change the car or the driver. Start an enquiry.

Common questions

Does adding a driver change the monthly figure?

It is confirmed with your quote rather than assumed either way on a page. What is certain is that the driver has to meet that vehicle’s criteria in their own right, and that the checks happen before they drive rather than after.

Does every driver need their own DVLA check code?

Yes. Each code belongs to one licence, is valid for twenty-one days and can be used once, so generate them close to the start date rather than the day you enquire. A code created three weeks early will have expired by the time the car arrives.

Can a driver be added at the roadside?

No, under any circumstances. Checks are done before a car is booked out, and somebody who has not been checked is not insured to drive it. That is the one condition here with no flexibility in it at all.

Can two named drivers be on different cars under the same agreement?

Yes. Several vehicles run on one agreement and one invoice with a named driver against each, and each keeps its own figures and its own criteria. A driver named against one vehicle is not automatically named against another.

What if a named driver picks up points during the term?

Tell us. The points tolerance published on a vehicle is a condition of the cover rather than a formality, so a change in a driver’s record during the term is something we would rather hear from you than discover. It is a conversation, not an automatic problem.
