What does a business need to lease a prestige car?
Updated 6 min read Performance & Prestige
A business needs its registered company details, a named driver who meets that vehicle’s own age, licence and points criteria, a billing contact, a payment card in the named hirer’s own name for the refundable deposit, a start date and a mileage figure. Everything else — the quote, the agreement, the delivery slot — follows from those.
What company details do you need?
Six pieces of information, and none of them is difficult to find.
- Registered company name, exactly as it is registered.
- Company registration number.
- Registered address, and the trading address if it differs.
- A billing contact — a name, an email address and a telephone number.
- A purchase order reference, if your finance process requires one on the invoice.
- A VAT registration number, if the company has one.
Having these at the enquiry stage rather than after the quote takes a round trip out of the process, which usually means a day rather than an hour.
Two of them cause most of the delay. The registered name has to be the registered name rather than the trading name — a business known to everybody as one thing and incorporated as another is the commonest mismatch we see — and the billing contact has to be somebody who will actually answer, because the agreement cannot be issued until a real person at the company has confirmed the terms.
What driver details do you need?
The same set for every person who will drive, and they are needed before the vehicle is booked out rather than at handover.
- Full name and date of birth.
- Driving licence number, and how long the full licence has been held.
- A DVLA licence check code — free, about a minute to generate, valid for twenty-one days and usable once.
- Any endorsements, with the conviction codes rather than just the points total.
- Photo identity and proof of address.
The codes matter as much as the number. A speeding endorsement and a drink-driving conviction are not the same thing to an underwriter even where the totals match.
Send them for everybody who might drive rather than only the person you expect to. Somebody who turns out to be needed in month three and was never submitted is a driver who cannot legally take the keys, and adding them then is the same set of checks done in a hurry.
What does the payment side look like?
Two separate things, and conflating them is the most common misunderstanding a finance team has about this.
The lease itself is invoiced to the company, with VAT shown separately and a purchase order number on it if you need one. Payment terms are agreed in writing before the agreement starts.
The refundable security deposit is not on that invoice. It is a hold against a payment card in the named hirer's own name — a person, not the business — arranged with somebody before delivery rather than taken online. Deposits run £1,500 to £50,000 across the catalogue.
What do you need from us to quote?
Three things, and they narrow the catalogue faster than anything else.
The car, or the kind of car. The start date. The term — three months is the shortest we write, and longer is normal.
Then the mileage you genuinely expect to do. 1,000 miles a month is included as standard on every vehicle; if that is wrong for how the car will be used, a higher allowance is far cheaper priced into the agreement at the start than settled at the end at 95p to £10 a mile.
What decides which cars a business can have?
The driver, not the company. Every vehicle sets its own minimum age, its own minimum period of full licence held and its own points tolerance, and the person driving has to pass all three on that specific car.
A strong company does not unlock a vehicle the policy will not accept for the driver you have named, and a larger deposit does not either. It is an insurance condition rather than a commercial one.
So the useful first question is not which car the budget reaches but which the named driver qualifies for. Driver requirements sets the tests out per vehicle, and every vehicle page carries its own three figures.
What do you not ask a business for?
A few things worth saying, because this sector has trained people to expect them.
We do not take a payment on the website and we do not ask for card details in a form. Nothing is paid online at any point; a person confirms every agreement.
We do not require the business to have leased before, to hold other vehicles, or to come through a broker. And we do not add costs after the quote — delivery and collection are priced on it, against your address, before you agree to anything.
What happens after you send it?
A quote comes back in writing naming the exact vehicle, the term, the monthly figure, the refundable deposit, the insurance excess, the mileage allowance and its excess rate, and delivery and collection.
If the car is in our fleet we can answer for it directly. If it is arranged through a vetted partner, we confirm the terms and the driver criteria with you in writing rather than assuming they match ours — and that confirmation comes before anything is agreed, not after.
Then the driver checks are completed, the agreement is sent to read in advance, and a delivery date and time are confirmed in writing.
What is confirmed in writing before anything is agreed?
All of it. The vehicle, the term, the monthly figure and what it includes, the deposit, the excess, the mileage allowance, the excess mileage rate, the named drivers, the delivery and collection arrangement, and the insurance position on that specific car.
That is a deliberate order of events. It means a problem surfaces while there is still time to fix it or to put you in a different vehicle, rather than in front of a transporter on the morning the agreement starts.
Start an enquiry, or read how it works if you would rather see the whole sequence first.Common questions
Can a newly incorporated company lease?
Tell us at the enquiry stage and you will get a straight answer for your situation rather than a general one. What is required is confirmed in writing before anything is agreed, and it is a far better conversation to have at the start than after a car has been reserved.
Can we name a driver who is not an employee?
Tell us who they are and their relationship to the business at the enquiry stage. Every named driver is checked in their own right against that vehicle’s age, licence and points criteria regardless of who employs them, and nobody drives who has not been named in advance.
Do you need our accounts or financial statements?
What is required in your case is confirmed with you in writing before anything is agreed. We would rather tell you exactly what we need for your situation than publish a list on a page that might be more, or less, than your business is actually asked for.
How many vehicles can one business have at a time?
More than one runs on a single agreement and a single invoice, with a named driver against each. Several starting together is a sourcing question as well as an availability one, so tell us how many and when as early as you can.
Is there a minimum term for a business agreement?
Three months, the same as for anybody else, on the same 1+2 structure: one month up front, then one a month, with 1,000 miles a month included. There is no shorter product, and a project that needs a vehicle for a fortnight is not something we can supply.
