Why hire the Spyder rather than the coupé?
The engine. A naturally aspirated V10 sitting a foot behind your head with no roof between you is the whole reason to hire this car, and it is an experience that is disappearing from the market. The Spyder loses a little rigidity and gains around 120kg, which you will not notice on a public road.
Is it usable in British weather?
Yes. The roof goes up in 17 seconds and will operate at up to 31mph, so a sudden shower is not a problem. With the roof up and the rear window raised it is quiet enough for conversation at 70mph. Ground clearance is the real constraint — the nose lift is worth using on steep driveways and speed humps.
What are the costs?
A refundable deposit near £10,000 and a similar excess apply. Mileage is normally 12,000 miles a year, with about £4 a mile beyond. Delivery anywhere in mainland Britain is arranged and quoted separately.
