What is the shortest car lease you can get in the UK?

Updated 7 min read Performance & Prestige

Three months is the shortest agreement we write, on every car in the catalogue, and a term that short is uncommon in the UK. Most leasing is written over two to four years. Anything shorter than about three months is normally a rolling subscription or a rental rather than a lease, and the difference shows up in what you commit to.

Where does the floor sit?

At three months, if what you want is an agreed term, a fixed monthly figure and a date on the end of it. Below that the market changes character: what is on offer stops being a lease and becomes either a rolling monthly subscription you can cancel, or a rental agreement priced by the day.

Those are legitimate products and they suit some people. They are not the same commitment, they are not priced the same way, and a comparison that puts them in the same column as a lease is comparing the wrong things.

Above three months the ladder is familiar. A year is the shortest term many brokers will look at. Two, three and four years are where the mainstream sits, and where the lowest monthly figures live.

Why do most leases start at two years?

Because the cost of a car is dominated by what it loses in value while you have it, and that loss is heaviest early. Spread it over three or four years and each payment is small. Spread it over three months and each payment carries a much larger share of it.

Everything else follows. Preparation, delivery, collection, inspection and putting the car back into service happen once per agreement regardless of its length, so a short agreement carries the same fixed work over fewer payments.

None of this makes a short term bad value. It makes it a different trade: more per month, far less in total, and an end date you chose rather than one you have to live with.

Is a subscription the same as a short lease?

No, and the distinction matters more than the marketing suggests. A subscription is usually rolling: you give notice, you hand the car back, and the monthly figure reflects the flexibility you are buying. A lease runs for the term you agreed at a figure that was set then, and neither side can change its mind halfway through.

Flexibility costs money, and that is the honest way to read the price difference. If you genuinely do not know whether you will still want the car in month four, it may be worth paying for. If you do know, you are paying for an option you will never exercise.

The other difference is what is bundled. Subscriptions often fold insurance and maintenance into one figure; a lease is more commonly the car and the term, with the rest confirmed separately. Neither is automatically better. They are simply not comparable on the headline number.

What is the shortest term we will write?

Three months, on every car, from the Audi SQ7 through to anything arranged through a partner. It moved to three months on 13 October 2026, and the reason was the market rather than an internal preference: demand for short terms is real, and a higher floor could not answer it.

Three months is a floor rather than a default. Longer terms are available on request, and the monthly figure normally improves as the term lengthens — the same arithmetic as above, running the other way.

What has not changed is the shape of the agreement. One month up front, then one a month, 1,000 miles a month, delivered or collected. A shorter term does not thin the agreement out.

How do you tell a real short lease from a rebadged one?

Four questions, and they take about a minute to ask.

  • Is the term set at the start, or rolling with a notice period? A notice period means a subscription.
  • Is the monthly figure fixed for the whole term? If it can be repriced mid-term, it is not a lease figure.
  • What is the total commitment, including everything paid at the start? A low monthly figure with a large initial payment is a different deal from the same figure without one.
  • What is actually included? Insurance, servicing, tyres and mileage are the four that move a headline number most.
How to compare two lease quotes properly turns those into a method you can apply to two real offers side by side.

Does a shorter term change what you can lease?

It changes availability rather than eligibility. Driver criteria are set against the car and do not move with the term: the minimum age is 25 on 44 cars and 30 or above on the fastest, whether you take that car for three months or three years.

What a short term does affect is which specific vehicles are free for your window. A car already committed for the spring cannot start a three-month agreement in March, and no flexibility on price changes that. It is why we ask for a date early rather than late.

Across a catalogue of 116 cars, and the 10 supercars within it, the practical answer is usually that something suitable is available on your dates even when your first choice is not.

What about terms shorter than three months?

We do not write them — not because a shorter agreement is impossible to price, but because it is a different product with different economics, and offering it badly would be worse than not offering it.

If your need is genuinely a few days, you want a rental company, and saying so is more use to you than a quote you will not take. If it is a matter of weeks, three months may still be worth costing out; the totals land closer together than people expect once several weeks of daily figures are added up.

The one thing we will not do is describe a three-month agreement as something it is not. It is a lease, its end date is set before it starts, and both sides are held to it.

Common questions

Is a longer lease cheaper per month than three months?

Usually, on the same car with the same mileage, because the cost is spread across more payments. Whether it is cheaper overall depends entirely on how long you actually need the car, which is the comparison that matters rather than the monthly figure on its own.

Can I take a longer term than three months?

Yes. Three months is the shortest we write, not the longest. Tell us the term you want at the enquiry stage and it is quoted against that, because the term and the mileage together are what produce the figure.

Do short leases need a bigger deposit?

The security deposit is set against the vehicle rather than the term — it reflects what the car is and what it would cost to put right. Deposits across the catalogue run from £1,500 to £50,000 and are confirmed in writing for your specific car before anything is agreed.

Is a short lease harder to get approved?

The checks are the same ones, done once at the start and read against the whole term. We ask about age, licence history and credit standing at the enquiry stage precisely so anything awkward surfaces while there is still time to put you in a different car.
