Can you end a car lease early, and what does it cost?
Updated 7 min read Performance & Prestige
Usually yes, and it costs. Ending a lease early is a termination rather than a cancellation: the agreement sets out what becomes payable, normally a proportion of the payments you would still have made, and any rent paid in advance is gone. Ask for that figure in writing before you sign.
Can you end a lease early at all?
In most cases yes, because most agreements contain a clause that says how. What you cannot usually do is simply stop paying and return the car — that is a breach, and it is handled as one.
The distinction matters. A termination under the agreement is a route the contract provides, with a price attached. A breach is you failing to do what you promised, and the consequences are wider and less predictable.
So the first thing to find is the clause. It will be called early termination, early settlement or voluntary termination depending on who drafted it, and it will tell you both whether you can and what it costs.
How is the cost worked out?
The principle is straightforward even when the arithmetic is not: the owner priced the agreement on the assumption it would run its term, and ending it early leaves them holding a car earlier than planned and with less rent than expected.
So the charge is built from what is left. Agreements commonly express it as a proportion of the payments still to come, sometimes with a notice period on top, sometimes with an administration fee. The proportion is set by the agreement rather than by law or by any industry standard, so it varies and it must be read rather than assumed.
Anything you have already paid stays paid. Advance rent bought months, and months you do not use are not refunded — which is the strongest practical argument against a nine-month initial payment on an agreement you are unsure about.
Does the length of the term change the exposure?
Enormously, and it is the single biggest thing within your control at the point of signing.
Exposure to an early exit is roughly a function of how many payments are left. Four months into a four-year agreement leaves forty-four payments behind the charge. Two months into a three-month minimum leaves one.
That is the honest case for a short minimum term, and it is not a pricing argument. A short agreement costs more per month, because the months are the expensive early ones. What it buys is a much smaller downside if your circumstances change, which is a different kind of value and one that percentage rules of thumb never price.
What are the alternatives to terminating?
Four, and they are all worth raising before you reach for the termination clause.
- Reduce the mileage allowance. If the reason is cost rather than the car, a smaller allowance may be re-priceable mid-term.
- Move to a cheaper car. Replacing an agreement is sometimes easier for an owner to accommodate than ending one.
- A payment arrangement. If the problem is temporary, raise it before a payment fails rather than after.
- Transfer the agreement. Rarely permitted, occasionally possible, never something to arrange privately without written consent.
Whichever you ask for, ask early. Every one of these is easier to arrange from a position of "this is coming" than from "this has happened".
What should you never do?
Three things, and each of them turns a manageable situation into a serious one.
Do not stop the payments and hope it resolves. A missed payment on a credit agreement can be reported, and the car is not yours to withhold.
Do not sell, sublet or hand the car to anyone else. You have no title to pass and no right to grant, and doing it can move the matter well beyond a contractual dispute.
Do not agree a figure verbally. Whatever is settled, have it in writing with the amount, the date the agreement ends, the arrangements for collection and confirmation that nothing further is owed.
What should you ask before you sign?
Five questions, and a good supplier answers them in writing without hesitating.
- Can I end this agreement early, and under which clause?
- How is the charge calculated, in a worked example at month two and month four?
- Is there a notice period, and does it run alongside the charge or after it?
- What happens to the advance rent and the deposit?
- What happens if the car is written off, which is an early ending you did not choose?
The questions are more useful than any answer. A supplier who will not put an early-exit figure in writing at the start is telling you how the conversation will go if you ever need it.
How does this work on a three-month minimum?
A three-month minimum term is the shortest agreement written here, and it is deliberately short. The whole exposure you are taking on is three months of payments, taken as two up front and then one a month, with 1,000 miles a month included.
That does not make an early exit free. A minimum term is a commitment for its length, and the terms that apply to ending one early are set out in the agreement you are given before anything is signed.
What it does mean is that the worst case is bounded and visible from the start, rather than being a clause you will read for the first time in a difficult month. Our terms and the agreement itself are the authority, and they are provided before a commitment, not after it.
Does ending early affect your credit file?
A lease is a credit agreement, so how it ends can be recorded. An agreement terminated under its own terms, with everything owing settled, is a different record from one that ended in arrears.
That is the practical reason to use the clause rather than stop paying: the route through the contract produces a clean closure, and the route around it does not.
If money is the underlying problem, say so early to whoever holds the agreement, and get free independent advice. There are national services that provide it without charge, and they are far better placed to help than a car company is.
Common questions
Is there a cooling-off period on a car lease?
It depends on how and where the agreement was made, and on what kind of agreement it is. It is not a universal right you can rely on. Ask the question before you sign and get the answer in writing rather than discovering the position afterwards.
What if my circumstances change through no fault of my own?
Raise it immediately with whoever holds the agreement. Redundancy, illness and relocation are common and the response is usually a conversation about options rather than a refusal — but only if it happens before payments start failing.
Can I hand the car back and walk away if I have paid half?
Do not assume so. A right to terminate after paying a proportion belongs to certain kinds of agreement and not to others, and a lease is not automatically one of them. Read the clause in your own agreement rather than a summary of somebody else’s.
Does an early termination charge include the excess mileage?
Usually it is separate. Miles driven are assessed on the odometer when the car goes back, whether the agreement ended early or ran its term. Budget for both rather than assuming one absorbs the other.
Is a short minimum term just a more expensive lease?
Per month, yes — the early months of a car’s life carry the steepest depreciation. What you are buying with the higher figure is a much smaller commitment, which is worth more to some people than a lower monthly figure over three years.
