What credit check does a car lease involve?

Updated 6 min read Performance & Prestige

A lease application involves a credit search, because a lease is a credit agreement. The lender is assessing affordability and payment history against the person or company that will be named. A quotation search and a full application search are different things, so ask which is being run before you give permission.

Why does leasing involve a credit check?

Because someone is handing over an expensive asset today in exchange for a promise of payments over a period. That is credit, whatever it is called on the paperwork, and it is assessed as credit.

The owner’s exposure is the car. If the payments stop, they are left recovering a vehicle that has already lost value, which is a worse position than the one they priced. The check is how that risk is managed before it exists rather than after.

It follows that the check is run against whoever is legally promising to pay. On a personal lease that is you. On a business lease it is the business, and often a director as well.

What is being assessed?

Three things, roughly in this order.

  • Identity. That you are who you say you are, and that the address history checks out. This is where the electoral roll matters.
  • Payment history. How existing and recent credit commitments have been handled. Patterns count for more than any single event.
  • Affordability. Whether the monthly figure is sustainable alongside what you already commit to each month.

The third is the one people underestimate. A strong history does not automatically carry an application if the commitment is large relative to income, and on prestige leasing the commitment is large by definition.

What is the difference between a quotation search and a full search?

A quotation search is used to see whether an application is likely to succeed, without submitting one. A full application search is the real thing, run when an application is made, and it is recorded on your file where other lenders can see it.

The distinction is important if you are shopping around, because a series of full searches in a short period is visible and can be read as a pattern. A series of quotation searches is not the same signal.

Practices differ between suppliers, and the only safe approach is to ask directly which kind of search is about to be run, and to give permission on that basis rather than assume. That is a reasonable question and a straight answer is easy to give.

What does a business application add?

A second subject and a second set of documents.

The business is assessed in its own right — how long it has traded, its filed accounts, its payment behaviour. A company with a long, clean trading history is a different proposition from one incorporated last quarter, and the assessment reflects that.

Where the business is young or thinly capitalised, a personal guarantee from a director is commonly requested. That is a serious commitment and it is worth reading carefully rather than treating as a formality: it makes an individual responsible for a company’s obligation.

Expect to be asked for company details, trading history and, frequently, bank statements. Business leasing sets out how it works here.

What should you have ready before applying?

Preparation is the single biggest thing that shortens the process, and none of it is difficult. Gather it before you are asked rather than after, because an application that stalls waiting for a document is an application somebody has to pick up again.

Three years of address history, with dates, and no gaps. Your full driving licence and a DVLA check code, which is free and takes about a minute to generate. Proof of income in whatever form matches how you are paid. Bank details for the payments.

If you are self-employed, expect to evidence income differently and gather it before rather than during. If you have recently moved, make sure the electoral roll and your licence address agree, because a mismatch is one of the most common causes of a delay on an application that was always going to succeed.

Does the check happen before or after you choose the car?

After you have chosen, in nearly every case, because the assessment is of a specific commitment rather than of you in the abstract. The monthly figure, the term and the deposit are inputs to it.

That ordering has a practical consequence worth knowing. A decision on one car is not automatically a decision on a more expensive one, so if you are weighing two cars at very different figures it is better to say so early than to be assessed twice.

Here, nothing is taken online and a person confirms every booking. So the sequence is a conversation, then a quote you can see in full, then an application — rather than a form that commits you before you have seen the numbers.

What happens if an application is not accepted?

You are told, and you should be told promptly rather than left to infer it from silence.

You are entitled to know that a credit reference agency was used and which one, so that you can check your own file. That is worth doing regardless of the outcome, because errors on credit files are more common than people expect and they are correctable.

What a supplier cannot do is give you the lender’s reasoning line by line, because they are usually not the decision-maker. What they can do is be straight with you about where the application stands and what, if anything, would change it.

Is the check different because these are expensive cars?

The mechanics are the same. The scale changes the emphasis.

A larger monthly commitment means affordability carries more weight, and the documentation asked for tends to be fuller. That is not suspicion; it is proportion.

Every agreement here is capable of running for three months or more, which is why the credit question is asked of everyone rather than of some people. It is an ordinary part of an underwritten agreement, it happens before the car is booked out to you rather than at the kerbside, and the criteria that go with it are on driver requirements.

Common questions

Can I see what the lender sees?

You can see your own file. Each of the UK credit reference agencies has to provide you with access to your statutory report, and checking it before you apply is the cheapest way to catch an error that would otherwise surface at the worst moment.

Does a joint application make a difference?

It changes what is being assessed rather than guaranteeing an outcome, and it also links the two people financially on their files. Worth understanding before it happens rather than after, because that link outlives the agreement.

How long does a decision take?

It varies with the lender and with how complete the application is when it is submitted. The reliable way to make it quick is to have the address history, licence, check code and income evidence ready before it goes in rather than assembling them afterwards.

Does a business lease avoid a personal check?

Not necessarily. Where a personal guarantee is requested, the individual giving it is assessed too. A long-established, well-capitalised company is more likely to be assessed alone, but that is a function of the company rather than of the product.

Do I need a credit check for a car you source through a partner?

Most of the catalogue is arranged through vetted partners, and those cars carry that partner’s criteria and their process rather than ours. We confirm what applies with you in writing before anything is agreed.
