What is a McLaren 750S like to drive?
Lighter than anything else at this level, and it shows immediately. The hydraulic steering is the best-communicating system on sale, the suspension links the corners hydraulically instead of using anti-roll bars, and the car breathes with the road rather than fighting it. It is quick in a way that a passenger notices before the driver does.
How does it compare with a 296 GTB?
The Ferrari is more sophisticated and more comfortable; the McLaren is more honest and more involving. The 750S has no hybrid weight, no electric mode and a simpler cabin. On a British B-road the McLaren feels the more agile car. On a 200-mile motorway leg to a track day, the Ferrari is the one you would rather be in.
What does hiring one cost?
A refundable deposit near £10,000 is standard, with a comparable insurance excess. Mileage is usually 12,000 miles a year and around £4.50 a mile beyond. Track use is not covered by standard hire insurance and must be arranged separately.
Can I take it on a track day?
Only under a specific arrangement. Standard self-drive hire insurance excludes circuit use, so a track booking has to be agreed with the supplier in advance and priced accordingly. Is the McLaren 750S four-wheel drive?
