Deceptive. In Comfort it is a large, quiet saloon that soaks up a motorway and carries four people and their luggage without complaint. Put everything in Sport Plus and it becomes something else entirely: 616bhp, 750Nm from 1,800rpm and a gearbox that hits shifts rather than slurs them. The Competition sits lower and stiffer than the standard M5, so it is firm around town, and that is the trade.
