Is the M3 the same car as the M4?
Mechanically, near enough. The same 503bhp straight-six, the same eight-speed automatic, the same chassis. The M3 has two more doors and a boot you can use, and it costs a little less to hire. If the shape does not matter to you, this is the more sensible half of the same decision.
Rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive?
This one drives the rear wheels, which is the enthusiast answer and the harder one in a British winter. It is a fraction slower to 62mph than the four-wheel-drive car and considerably more interesting once you are moving. If the booking is November to March and you want certainty rather than character, say so and we will look at the xDrive M4 instead.
Can you use it as a normal saloon?
Yes, and that is much of the point of it. Five seats, a full-size boot and a ride that is firm rather than brutal. People hire an M3 for a week and use it as a car, which is not something you can say about most of this catalogue.
What does it sound like?
Quieter than its predecessor and a great deal quieter than an RS 3. The straight-six is a smooth, hard-revving engine rather than a theatrical one. If noise is what you are hiring for, the RS 3 or the C 63 will do more for you.
