> A grand tourer is a front-engined, two-door car built to cross a country quickly and comfortably: big engine, long gearing, a boot that takes two people's luggage, and usually a pair of occasional rear seats. The GT is the oldest idea in fast cars and still the most useful one. Where a supercar is thrilling for two hours and hard work for eight, a grand tourer is designed for the eighth hour: quiet at a cruise, supple over a broken A-road, and still capable of the same absurd overtake when the road opens. For a weekend in Scotland, Wales or the West Country it is the correct answer more often than not.

## What makes a car a grand tourer rather than a supercar?

Layout and intent. The engine sits in front of the driver rather than behind, which frees a boot and, usually, a pair of small rear seats. Power is delivered through torque rather than revs, gearing is long, the suspension is tuned for compliance as well as control, and the cabin is built to be quiet at 70mph. The result is a car that can be driven 400 miles in a day without leaving you exhausted.

## Why is a GT the best car for a British weekend?

Because a British weekend involves distance before it involves a good road. Getting from a London delivery to the Highlands, from Manchester to Snowdonia, or from Birmingham to the West Country means a few hundred motorway miles at each end — and the GT is the only category that treats them as pleasant rather than as a tax on the fun part. Add real luggage space for two and it becomes obvious.

## GT or supercar for a long drive?

Take the GT if you are covering more than about 150 miles a day, carrying anything more than a soft bag, or driving with a passenger who would like to hold a conversation. Take the supercar if the drive is short, the roads are known, and the noise and the occasion are the point. Both are correct answers to different weekends, and we would rather you booked the right one than the more expensive one.

## How is grand tourer hire priced?

One monthly figure on a twelve-month minimum term. This is the category where the mileage allowance is worth checking hardest, because a GT is the car people actually cover distance in. Watch the allowance rather than the rate alone: a 600-mile weekend can put more on the excess-mileage line than the difference between two cars.

## Driver criteria for this category

Minimum age 25–30, with 3–8 years of full licence held and a tolerance of 3–6 penalty points. Deposits run £3,500–£30,000 and the insurance excess £3,500–£25,000. ## Frequently asked questions

### Are the rear seats in a GT usable?

For children, for short journeys, or for luggage — not for adults over any distance. A 2+2 is a two-seater with useful extra space behind. If four adults are travelling, look at the luxury SUV category instead.

### How much luggage will a grand tourer take?

Typically enough for two people for a long weekend, with soft bags travelling better than hard cases. Boot dimensions are listed on each vehicle page; the rear seats absorb the overflow on most cars in the class.

### What mileage allowance do I get for a long trip?

Each car states a daily allowance and a pence-per-mile rate beyond it. For a Highlands or West Country weekend, tell us the planned mileage at the enquiry stage — we would rather build the extra miles into the quote than have you discover them on the final invoice.

### Are grand tourers four-wheel drive?
