**They share a naturally aspirated V10 and a great deal of engineering, and differ almost entirely in temperament. The Audi R8 Spyder is ours, on a three-month minimum term. Every Huracán, and the R8 coupe, are arranged through vetted partners. All four are quoted on request, and the Huracán Tecnica holds the least of the four.**

Two cars built around the same V10, sold to opposite kinds of driver. One announces you; the other lets you arrive unannounced with exactly the same engine behind your head.

## How closely related are these cars?

Very. The [Audi R8 V10 performance](https://performanceandprestige.co.uk/cars/audi-r8-v10-performance) is, as the description on its own page puts it, a Huracán in a suit: the same naturally aspirated V10, the same four-wheel drive, far less shouting. They were developed alongside one another, and the mechanical overlap is the reason this comparison is about temperament rather than capability.

What you are choosing between is how the car presents you. A [Huracán](https://performanceandprestige.co.uk/cars/lamborghini-huracan-tecnica) is a public event: angular, low, unmistakable, photographed by strangers. An R8 is read by most people as an expensive Audi, and only recognised for what it is by people who know. Neither reading is better. They are just very different three months.

## There are four cars here, not two

It is worth separating them, because the differences within each badge are as large as the differences between them.

The [Huracán Tecnica](https://performanceandprestige.co.uk/cars/lamborghini-huracan-tecnica) is the rear-wheel-drive coupe, the most driver-focused version of the V10 and the one most people picture when they say supercar. The [Huracán EVO Spyder](https://performanceandprestige.co.uk/cars/lamborghini-huracan-evo-spyder) is the four-wheel-drive convertible — the last naturally aspirated V10 you can lease with the roof down. The [Audi R8 Spyder V10 performance quattro](https://performanceandprestige.co.uk/cars/audi-r8-spyder-performance) is the open Audi, and it is in our own fleet. The R8 V10 performance coupe is the closed one, arranged through a partner. All four are two-seaters with dual-clutch automatics.

## Rear-wheel drive or four?

Only one of the four is rear-driven: the Huracán Tecnica. Everything else here is four-wheel drive, and over an agreement of three months or more that difference will show up more often than any other on this page.

Four-wheel drive is what makes a V10 supercar usable in February. It does not make the car dull — the R8 Spyder and the EVO Spyder are both quattro cars and neither could be described that way — but it removes a category of anxiety on a cold, greasy roundabout. The Tecnica's rear drive is a deliberate choice by Lamborghini for a driver who wants the car to be more involving, and it is the better car on a dry summer road for exactly that reason. Decide which months of the year your term mostly falls in.

## What does each one hold, and what does it charge per mile?

The spread is wider than the mechanical similarity suggests. The Huracán Tecnica holds a refundable £5,000 deposit against a £5,000 insurance excess, with mileage above the included 1,000 miles a month at £2.50 a mile — the gentlest figures of the four, and one of the more accessible supercars in the whole catalogue.

Both R8s sit at £7,500 for the deposit and the excess, with mileage at £3.50 a mile. The Huracán EVO Spyder holds the most: £10,000 against a £10,000 excess, with mileage at £4 a mile. So the open Lamborghini asks for twice what the coupe does, which is a gap worth knowing about before the roof decides it for you. Every figure here is provisional while the insurance arrangement is finalised and confirmed in writing before anything is agreed.

## Which is easiest to qualify for?

The R8 coupe, at a minimum age of twenty-eight with a full licence held for at least five years and no more than six points. The R8 Spyder, the Huracán Tecnica and the Huracán EVO Spyder are all set at thirty on the same licence and points requirement.

That makes the sourced R8 coupe the most open route into a naturally aspirated V10 that we list, which is a useful thing to know if you are twenty-eight or twenty-nine and have been told no elsewhere. As always, criteria follow the insurance profile of the specific car rather than its price, and we confirm where you stand at enquiry before anything is agreed and before any money moves.

## Both of these engines are finite

This is the argument that makes the comparison feel urgent rather than academic. Audi no longer builds the R8, and there is no naturally aspirated V10 anywhere else in its range to replace it. Lamborghini has moved on too: the Huracán's successor is the [Temerario](https://performanceandprestige.co.uk/cars/lamborghini-temerario), a plug-in hybrid V8, which is a fine car and is not the same instrument at all.

So the four cars on this page represent a kind of engine that has stopped being made. A three-month lease is a genuinely different way of experiencing that from a weekend — long enough to stop treating the noise as an event and start noticing how the thing behaves cold, in traffic, on a wet Tuesday and on an empty Sunday morning. Over a term of months it is the ordinary journeys that end up mattering rather than the dramatic ones, and that is an experience a weekend cannot give you.

## The case for the quieter one

It is a stronger case than it gets credit for. A Huracán makes every journey an interaction — with pedestrians, with phone cameras, with the man at the petrol station who wants to talk about it. For a weekend that is delightful. For three months it can become wearing, and it is worth asking yourself honestly whether what you want is the engine or the audience.

The R8 gives you the second without the first. It is also no longer in production, which gives a three-month lease a particular quality: the naturally aspirated V10 has no successor at Audi, and there will not be another chance to live with one as a new-car experience. The R8 Spyder is ours, which means we hold it, prepare it and deliver it, and the figure comes back from us rather than through somebody else's confirmation.

## Loud or quiet: which V10 should you take?

Take the Huracán Tecnica if you want the full experience and you want it in the most involving form: rear drive, the lowest deposit of the four, the shape everyone recognises. Take the EVO Spyder if the roof and the noise together are the whole point and the higher deposit and mileage rate do not worry you.

Take the R8 Spyder if you want the same engine with open air, considerably less attention and a car we hold ourselves, or the R8 coupe if you are under thirty and the Lamborghinis will not accept you yet. Whichever way you go, the car is delivered to an address you choose in mainland Britain, and for the three sourced cars here the figure and the availability are confirmed in writing before anything is agreed.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the Audi R8 really the same car as a Huracán?

Not the same car, but closely related: the same naturally aspirated V10 and the same four-wheel-drive layout, developed alongside one another. The Huracán Tecnica is the exception on drivetrain, because it is rear-wheel drive. The differences you will notice day to day are noise, shape and how people react to it.

### Which of these can I lease with the roof down?

The Audi R8 Spyder, which is ours, and the Lamborghini Huracán EVO Spyder, which is arranged through a vetted partner. Both run on a three-month minimum term and both are quoted on request, though the EVO Spyder holds £10,000 to the R8’s £7,500. The Huracán Tecnica and the R8 coupe are both fixed-roof cars.

### Which is the cheapest V10 to hold?

The Huracán Tecnica, on the published figures: a £5,000 refundable deposit against a £5,000 excess, with mileage at £2.50 a mile. Both R8s hold £7,500 and charge £3.50 a mile, and the Huracán EVO Spyder holds £10,000 and charges £4.

### Can a 28-year-old lease any of these?

The Audi R8 V10 performance coupe is set at twenty-eight with five years of full licence and no more than six points. The other three are set at thirty. Criteria are provisional while the insurance arrangement is finalised, and we confirm yours at enquiry.

*Pre-launch note: the driver criteria, deposits, excesses and mileage allowances quoted here are read from Performance & Prestige's own catalogue data, which is still being confirmed with the owner and the insurer. Read them as the shape of the figures rather than as a quotation. What binds is your written quote and your agreement.*
